Notes from the Building Block Age

During a short layover in Frankfurt, my cousin and I visited the building block exhibition “Architekturbaukästen 1890 – 1990.” As soon as I entered the room, I saw small and medium-sized buildings made of various materials. But as you walked through the room, you came across a huge church built entirely of fiberboard blocks. My younger cousin, of course, immediately had to stick his head inside. My older cousin and I built a small house out of harder rubber. My cousin went around the room and continued building the second large model. It was made of white plastic.

I found the experience at the building block exhibition incredibly exciting because you could try out how the blocks felt and fit together. We went from station to station, and because you were allowed to touch many of the items, you learned about the different materials used in the past and later. I was disappointed that the 3D glasses didn’t work that day. We didn’t read much, but we were able to see the many different building sets and try out many of them.
